Our closest city got its first domestic violence shelter this week and I applaud all those responsible for achieving this laudable goal. Access to safety like that was not available back in the dark ages when I was trying to extricate myself from a really bad situation. But I must have dropped my jaw with a considerable thud upon reading of its open house celebration in the local paper. Upon explaining my consternation to the Rev, he was equally nonplussed. They published the exact address and noted the location of the 'recovery residences' before inviting everyone to drop by. Does that include the batterers who will now know where to find their prize punching bags?! Can I get a collective "Duh!", or is it just me?
On a parallel note, run out and get the movie, Idiocracy, concerning a future where the man with half a brain can be considered king. Yes, it has the ubiquitous fart and ball-kicking jokes associated with trailer trash genre, but it has a well-written script and a valid concept.
